Non-Emergency Medical Transportation

Here’s how wheelchair and stretcher services are utilized for NEMT

Both wheelchair and stretcher transportation services are part of Wecare4you’s NEMT benefit in North Carolina. Medicaid recipients can access these services if they are deemed medically necessary. Providers of NEMT services must comply with state and federal regulations regarding the equipment and vehicles used for these services, as well as training requirements for staff.

Wheelchair Transportation Services

For individuals who are unable to walk or require assistance with mobility but do not need an ambulance, wheelchair-accessible vehicles are used. These vehicles are equipped with ramps or lifts to safely load and unload passengers in wheelchairs.

The service is often used for those attending routine medical appointments, physical therapy, dialysis, or other non-emergency medical visits.

Stretcher Transportation Services

Stretcher transportation is provided for individuals who cannot sit upright or who must remain lying down during transit due to medical conditions. Stretcher services are often requested for patients discharged from hospitals or those who require ongoing care in a prone position for medical reasons.

This service requires specialized vehicles with stretchers and staff trained in safely transporting patients in this condition.
